New family members

On 1 May 2004, with the accession of ten new member states, the EU recorded its historically most significant growth. In 2007, two more states, Romania and Bulgaria, joined. The membership of Turkey seems to be more complicated. According to polls, 80% of the Turks want to move closer to Europe. In contrast, many Europeans have the opinion that an Asian country with a predominantly Islamic population does not fit into a Western Christian confederation. Since 26 October, 2005, concrete accession negotiations have been held with Turkey.
