Peace Conference in Münster 1648
In the second chapter devoted to the Counterreformation ( The Peace of Westphalia or the Peace of Osnabrück and Münster) Gerard Ter Borch's(1617-1681) miniature historical painting Swearing of the Oath of Ratification of the Treaty of Münster is integrated as a half-page detail into the authors' text without a comment. The authors summarise the most important resolutions contained in the treaty and their impact on Europe. These comments are complimented with a political map of Europe from 1648.
More information relating to the painting of Ter Borch is provided on the website of the National Gallery, London:https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/gerard-ter-borch-the-ratification-of-the-treaty-of-munster (05.03.2018).

The history textbook Das Abendland als europäisches Staatensystem was designed for the use at the upper secondary level in Germany. It is divided into five large sections and it covers the period from the Reformation in the first half of the sixteenth century until the Enlightenment, and the Congress of Vienna in 1815.The entire textbook is characterised by an uncommonly large number of illustrations and charts, which are included in almost every page for illustrative purposes.
