"The Portuguese take possession of the land of brazilwood"

This comic depicts an encounter between the colonising Portuguese and the indigenous people of what is now Brazil. In the first scene, a Portuguese man asks a member of the indigenous tribe if the land has any gold or gems to offer, and whether a conquest would be profitable. The indigenous man, equipped with a headdress and a spear, is bewildered.

In the second scene, two indigenous people are secretly watching a Portuguese church service. One of them expresses his lack of understanding for the way in which the new arrivals are celebrating their festivities.

In 1976, this Brasilian history textbook for primary education already reached its tenth edition. It was followed by the volume Creative Teaching of Brazilian history – Empire and Republic.
