Collection "WorldViews"
WorldViews is a multilingual online edition of digitalised textbook extracts relating to topics of inter-regional, transnational, and global significance for teaching and research.
The textbook sources have been taken from different textbooks from countries across the globe and various time periods and are therefore especially suitable for the analysis of multi-perspectivity. The material available in the online source edition may, for instance, make it possible to review images of the self and the other, to analyse these in a historical context, and recognise connections. The WorldViews sources reveal a certain historical fluidity in respect to regional and spatial attributions. They illustrate how bodies of knowledge and connotations can vary on a worldwide level, and how they shift over the course of time. In this respect, WorldViews reflects modern transnationally and globally oriented research about societal production, organisation, and circulation of knowledge as well as its cross-regional ‘translatability’, and how it is informed by various media and interwoven into historical processes.
The edited textbook extracts are digitalised and made available online for researchers and teachers as well as the public in full text including TEI-codes. They are translated into German as well as English in order to overcome language barriers where possible, compared according to their world views, commented on by scholars, and contextualised. The translations follow the original languages closely and are commented on by the translators and editors in the footnotes in order to draw attention to linguistic features and peculiarities.
The project was funded by the Germany Federal Ministry for Education and Research (2015-2017) and the Georg Eckert Institute.
