In these parts it is demonstrated how Irish citizens are citizens of the world as well and how the world is interconnected. Apart from the European Union, the Council of Europe and the United Nations are introduced. The paragraph about the European Union states that Ireland has profited from its membership in the EU and vice versa.

We have already explained that we are not just citizens of Ireland; we are citizens of the world. We live in an interdependent world that is linked together in many different ways. These lessons look at some of the different international groupings that Ireland is a member of: the Council of Europe, the European Union and the United Nations.

Ireland and the EU

Ireland joined the European Economic Community in 1973. The United Kingdom and Denmark joined the EEC on the same day bringing the membership up to nine countries. Much has changed since then. The EEC is now known as the European Union and there are 27 member states today. Much has changed in Ireland too since 1973. Ireland has benefited from being a member of the EU - the EU has benefited also from Ireland’s membership!
