§ 82.

Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Leopold I 1658-1705.

1. The course of the Thirty Years' War and the Peace of Westphalia had brought about a change in the meaning and position of the states. The Habsburg monarchies (Austria-Spain), which had been the most powerful since the days of Charles V, sank down from their proud height, and France overweight in Europe. The most influential person of the continent in the following period was the French King Louis XIV. He was the initiator of most wars, brought about a considerable change in the territorial relations of many states, and also had such a decisive influence on the spiritual and moral life of his time and in the period that followed, on thinking, customs, literature, art, especially in France and Germany, that the whole age from the Peace of Westphalia to the reign of Frederick the Great was named after him.
