Glossary

The glossary provides conceptual and factual explanations and a socio-political contextualisation of terms in the respective source texts. Different layers of meaning can thus be made visible at a national, historical, but also a transnational comparative level.

Indios

Indios or (South American) Indians was the name for the indigenous peoples of South America. The term, however, is perceived as insulting by some people, partly because the indigenous population of South America is culturally and linguistically diverse and does not necessarily view itself as one group. In English speaking contexts, the term Emancipation is often used in the context of the slave liberation.
